Correlation and Causation

The Maxim

There is a scientific maxim which all dowsers would do well to remember:

Correlation is not causation.

In other words, just because something appears to happen or be linked to an event or outcome, it does not mean that it causes it.

Referring back to the car and the ice-cream, the correlation was that vanilla ice-cream caused the car not to start.

But, they just happened to coincide. One did not cause the other. It was the length of time which was the culprit, not the ice-cream.

But, in our dowsing, we can often find an answer which seems to fit. And we accept it as the truth. (I think that the truth is a lot more difficult to in down in general, but I'll leave that for another post.)

However, just because we think that it fits, that it makes sense, then it has to be correct.

For example, suppose you were dowsing why you had leg pains. You had been walking a lot, so your first thought that it was muscle strain. But that didn't make much sense. But you had discovered about electrical fields and how they can influence you. You dowsed and discovered that the problem was due to the wiring from a lamp running beneath the sofa that was the cause. Nice. Neat. Sensible. But not necessarily true.

What about the energy line running through the house instead which had happened recently?

If you didn't think to ask the right question, you get an answer and bang! Correlation is causation (apparently).

Not so.

Causation is…

The only way around this problem is to ask ALL the questions, cover ALL the bases, even the areas you're not familiar with. If you stick within your own comfort zone of dowsing, you'll get answers for sure. And you'll get answers which seem to fit.

But, remember, in dowsing as in science; Correlation Is Not Causation.
