Is Dowsing The Future Possible?

Short answer: yes. But is it wise? Will you be accurate? Short answer: no. Divination, or predicting the future, is a dowsing application that is attractive to all new dowsers. However, new dowsers do not have enough mastery of technique to get accurate answers. They don't even know the many pitfalls to avoid. Even veteran dowsers can fall into these traps, so we advise you not to dowse the future.

What Are The Pitfalls?

So you're going to dowse the future anyway. We all do it now and then! What pitfalls should you avoid? The most common problems include:

  • Not using proper dowsing technique
  • Dowsing above your level of dowsing competence
  • Being attached to a certain answer
  • Having fear about the answer

It's easy enough to learn how to dowse properly. Too many folks think swinging a pendulum and getting a yes or no is all there is to dowsing. Not true. It isn't that hard to learn to dowse properly, but you must master the basics if you want accurate answers. Our course is a great way to become a confident, accurate dowser.

Even if you have learned the basics, if you have not become confident and mastered them, you can make mistakes. Practice is the best way to achieve mastery. We recommend you dowse ‘tangible targets' at least 80% of the time so you can measure your accuracy. By this, we do NOT mean coin tosses or card suits. Rather, we recommend you dowse meaningful subjects you want to get information about which you can later check results. For ideas, download our free book 101 Amazing Things You Can Do With Dowsing, available at all major online booksellers. Then practice.

Being attached to an answer and having fear are connected. Most future dowsing is based on fear, whether we want to admit it or not. We need a sense of control in order to be calm. We fear what the results of our test might be or how happy we'll be if we marry someone or accept a job offer or buy a particular car. The problem is that if fear is your motive and/or you strongly desire a particular answer, you will almost always get the answer you want to hear. This is not dowsing. Learning to remove fear and being detached are vital to accurate dowsing, but it takes time to achieve this. We recommend using techniques like meditation, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), The Emotion Code or any method you feel would help you achieve harmony and calm.

Don't Do It

Even if you master all the of above suggestions, dowsing the future is still problematic. How do you picture the future? How do you picture time? What are your beliefs about the future? All of these things will affect your results. Quantum physics says all time is one, that linear time is not ‘real'. If this is so, how can you affect the future? You can get very confused the deeper you dive into the whole issue of time.

The plain fact is that if you truly master dowsing, you will also have to master fear and become detached. If you do that, you won't feel a pressing need to dowse about the future. And when you are tempted, you will recognize that you are coming from a place a fear, which is not a place you want to be. Becoming a masterful dowser will teach you to let go of fear, release the need to control and trust that all is happening in a way that will support your goals (assuming you have goals). This is one reason dowsing mastery can indeed be a path to enlightenment.

Have you found that as you learn to let go of fear, you feel less compelled to dowse about the future? Please comment below.

I spent most of my career in strategic planning which often entailed making projections concerning the economy or how certain markets would grow or not. After dealing over the years with the fears and desires of corporate managers, those of us in this discipline came up with a “Confucius Says” witticism:

Confucius say “He who predicts the future will always be wrong, even when he is right.”

    Hi Maggie,
I like surprises so I’m not interested in the future. To Luke’s reply I give the Oscar, brilliant.
I did ask about the past once and only once, satisfied with the answer never went there again.

    Kind regards,
    Ziggy

Being in the ‘now’ is definitely the way to live. Though I admit it can be a challenge to some of us. :)

In my opinion, the pendulum can show something that has already happened. For example, something happened and left a mark – like a vibration, energy or frequency. When dowsing the future, the dowser has to take the results with a grain of salt.

Most people see time as linear, and that being the case, their dowsing of the future is not going to be reliable, as you point out.

What about when you are in a food store or in a pharmacy and you dowse whether or not some product will be of benefit (when you take it home) Or….will be ripe on time for event etc, is that not a form of dowsing the future.

I am so glad you asked this question! Short answer is: yes, such questions are a form of dowsing the future. You are asking about something related to a future time. However, it is not merely asking what will happen in the future, nor is it coming from a place of fear. Divining the future using any method including dowsing is chancy, because it comes from fear 99% of the time, meaning you are attached to a certain result. And you are just asking what’s going to happen. We suggest you avoid doing this.

But: when you are making a choice in the present, you have a right and in a sense, a responsibility, to make that choice based on your goals, to find out what’s best for you, and the future does have a part in that. Many choices of making purchases, from buying a new car to choosing an avocado, can bring you closer to your goals or lead you astray.

By dowsing how satisfied you would be about a particular choice five years from now (the car is an example), you are helping to choose wisely and well, not coming from fear. By asking which avocado will be the perfect ripeness the day you wish to put it in a salad, you are making a good choice today to create a better tomorrow, not coming from fear. Using dowsing to create harmony and happiness is the way dowsing is meant to be used. Everyday dowsing and dowsing about life choices are great ways to improve your life with dowsing.

Can you see the difference between this type of dowsing and divining the future? Thanks for bringing this up!

I believe that time is not linear, and also that we make hundreds of decisions on a daily basis, each and every one of which affects the future that we experience personally, so if I dowse a question about some future event, the answer I get is true, at that exact moment. But decisions I make after that moment will have an effect on the future that I experience. So we affect and change whatever our future will look like by the decisions we make and actions we take in the Now. Nothing is written in stone, everything is in flux, nothing stays the same, what is now, will be different in the future. Our thoughts can affect what we experience.

Exactly! I also believe the past is mutable, as shown in Lynne McTaggart’s book “The Intention Experiment”. To me, dowsing can be a first step towards empowerment, in that to master dowsing, you must let go of certain beliefs and programming that makes you a victim or powerless. In doing so, you begin to understand that your choices are your biggest power, and that your intention combined with your choices can create your reality. Those of us who persist in mastering dowsing see things in new, more empowered ways. Isn’t it fun?

Hi Maggie. This is a very good article. I know from experience that you should not try to predict the future. Especially asking about material gain is a no no. I like what Malcolm said. He is correct about making decisions changes the future. It sounds like Malcolm may have read The Secret. If not, he is very smart. I believe a person may not be able to predict the future without training, but they can guide their future by creating positive energy in the now to have influence on their future.

I have a plaque on my office wall that says, “The best way to predict your future is to create it”. I like that reminder. I agree with you. It’s usually a sign of fear or powerlessness when we dowse the future. It says, “I am not powerful enough to create my future” or “I’m scared something I don’t want will happen; tell me it won’t”. It’s best only to use future dowsing in ways we describe in our course and on this site.

Thank you so much! I’d really appreciate your posting a review on Amazon. The last few reviews were not very nice, and it seems the people who’ve loved the book haven’t had time to review it lately. We give it away for free and describe it carefully so as not to misrepresent it, but you know how folks vent sometimes…anyway, it would be great if you’d post a review on Amazon for 5 stars, if you feel it deserves it.
